FRIDAY CHATTER

President’s Report

As most of you know one of my major agendas as President is the improvement of our course and as such thought it was time to give you all, an update on our course developments.

3RD HOLE

Due to the odd golf ball landing in backyards of adjoining properties (believed mainly from social players) owners of effected houses requested Mounties to address the problem. Originally it was proposed to construct a new 40-metre-high safety fence at an estimated cost of $650,000 or possibly turning the 3rd into another par 3 hole. Both Bruce Grant and  myself who are on the grounds committee have strongly opposed these proposals for the last 4 years.

The good news is that through the efforts of the Golf committee, Mountain’s Management, club’s advisor committee and neighbours a compromise has been reached. You will have noticed a new social tee has been built, also the trees have been cut back on the left side of fairway and the O.O.B. Pegs have been moved in about 10 metres on the right side of fairway all to encourage players to hit away from the houses and changes I negotiated with neighbours eliminating the need for one very expensive safety fence to be constructed.

These are permanent changes that will allow us to keep the 3rd as a Par 4 for members. It also means we won’t lose $650k out our future course development fund for a safety fence. It’s been a lengthy process but worth the effort and it’s a good outcome for you the members.

2ND TEE

Construction of steps to the 2nd Tee will commence on Wednesday- Weather Permitting.

5TH GREEN

Black fungus is back due to high humidity, ground staff have given the green two doses of fungicide and top dressed in sand, which should alleviate the problem.

ALL FAIRWAYS:

Will be cored next Wednesday which is now a 6 monthly procedure to promote grass growth.

GREENS:

We normally core the greens on the 1st Monday in March and September each year, however this year the contractor will simply be aerating the greens with solid tines. The greens will then be fertilised and lightly top dressed which should result in a much quicker recovery time with less disruption to our members competitions.

Finally there are no major construction planned for this year. The next projects are drainage of the 9th Fairway and completion of  the rock wall around the 9th green.
