9 Hole Competition Review

To all our Golf Members

Your golf committee members understand the desire to return to a 4 player, 18 hole format for competition golf at the earliest possible time.

The committee will strive to achieve this in a way that is safe for our members within the current health advice and in consultation with the Breakers club management and Club Professionals .

The interim focus is to facilitate the maximum number of members having access to competition golf 3 days each week, whilst working within health guidelines and ensuring an adequate financial return to fund course staff and maintenance .

Several weeks ago, we saw a significant increase in golf member waiting lists, we were required to reduce playing groups to 2, whilst continuing with an 18 hole format.

Being a 9 hole course this severely restricted the number of members getting a game, with all online bookings being filled within minutes of opening. With only 70 members getting a game each day, waiting lists in the high 20’s were the normal and that’s not taking into account members who simply didn’t bother to try.

Following a productive meeting of the golf committee with the Breakers CEO and Club Professionals a decision was taken to trial a 9 hole-2 player format over 3 weeks to determine member take up, and alleviate waiting lists .

Apart from 2 rain days in that time, the timesheets have been largely fully booked out at 124 players, with small or no waiting lists.

At the time of the review, another option was to limit members to 1-2 competition games per week and stay with an 18 hole format. This would be logistically much more difficult to manage and was therefore not the recommended option.

At the conclusion of the 3 week trial it is fair to say the result shows the majority of members accept the prevailing circumstances and enjoy the chance to play regular competition golf, albeit a 9 hole format.

The decision has been made to continue with the 9 hole competitionswhilst your match committee in conjunction with club management and professionals, have regular discussions and will return to an 18 hole format with 4 players per time slots as soon as the NSW health advice allows.
