Pennants Update - Round 7 - 27 February '22

By Rod Hutchinson

The teams headed up to Magenta to take on Wyong and despite a week of heavy rain, the course presented in amazing condition. The greens were fast and true, fairways had bounce and run with no puddles to be seen. In fact, the only rain all day was a brief 15min downpour just prior to tee off.

Peter Crowder in a tough place, despite 2 solid shots. Magenta's little fairway bumps, nooks and crannies can be brutal.

C Grade - All Square - 1 1/2 to 1 1/2

Chris Mott + Gary Evans. WON 4&2. The most formidable pairing since Han and Chewy, they boys got the job done once again. Chris worked his way around the course beautifully early to help build a lead, then Gaz stepped up to the plate when his partner decided to have a breather. Jeff said they just work so well together, holding onto the lead once got it to close out a well deserved win.

Adam Quayle + Colin Coote. All SQUARE. More comebacks than Johnny Farnham this match, fighting  from 2 down three times in the day. Colin had some inspiring shot making leading the charge early on including some clutch putts. At 2 behind with 2 to play, Adam fired right up and birdied the long par 17th, then hit 2 cracking 3 woods to short of the green on the last, before chipping to 6ft to win the hole and square it up.

Patty Hudson + Garrie Johnstone. Lost 3 & 1. As per the words of Manager Jeff Perry, "they battled valiantly all day only to narrowly go down the last three holes". It was a see sawing battle up until that point, Pat with some magic on the greens, Garrie too around them. The lads couldn't get their nose in front but battled hard to square it a half dozen times. It was Garrie's first loss in Pennants, drowning his sorrows later back at Breakers.

B Grade - LOST 0 -3

Peter Searle + Wayne Fuller. Lost 2 & 1. The lads were level or had noses in front for most of the day, some magic from the sand on the 14th by Peter helping the team go 1 up. Wyong then won three in a row to take the carpet from under our feet and get the W.

Peter Crowder + Rod Hutchinson. Lost 4 & 3. Peter got his 1st start of the season with John S and then reserve Paul E not able to play, Peter did play well throughout the day managing the course well. First timer Rod at Magenta found the greens in particular tough to get the speed of, resulting in missed opportunities. The two Wyong guys each hit the ball 250+ each all day, although rarely straight they did find other fairways or alike and were just too strong.

Neale Carr + Darren Hutton. Lost 3 & 1. Paired together again after some good recent wins, back to earth for the guys with a narrow loss. Both fought strongly all day, Neale leading the way with some consistent driving and irons, but taming the greens was a challenge. Darren just couldn't quite get into gear, with opposition closing it out late.

STANDINGS AND POSSIBLE OUTCOMES.....

C Grade - Leaders Mangrove Mtn have their bye this coming week to remain frozen on 17pts, meaning if we can get outright wins in our two final matches then we can finish level on points if Mangrove lose in the final week. Good luck to Jeff and the team....

B Grade - Now officially out of the race for the title, but can still grab a podium spot given Mangrove have a bye this week. There will no shortage of effort and commitment as the lads look to finish the season on a high.
