Axeman Winner-Mark Leary

A final of the AXEMAN shootout  held today  Tuesday 19th December 2023 despite a threat of storms interrupting the proceedings.

10 very excited members tee off at the first with no one getting into serious trouble. Jeff Perry was out on course keeping an eye on the scores and judging the chip offs.

Michael Gerakios was the first to be axed, given a second chance, having hit his drive into the trees on first, only to finish on the middle of the fairway. A three putt on the first green was his undoing.

Over the next four holes Stephen Graham, Stephen Deane, Brett Wright, and Warrick Uzelac were axedafter a chip off.

Peter Whalan, Lester Pearson, and Mark Leary were in good form and making pars to stay in the competition.

The 7th hole caused a few problems for most of those left fighting it out. Lester Pearson found trouble on the edge of the dam (see photo), rather than take a drop he waded into the mud and managed to get his ball back on the fairway. John Farrell also decided to feed the eels with his ball. Eventually all four players reached the green, had the same score, the chip off was scrappy and John Farrell was axed.

The three amigos headed to the 8th Tee, Mark Leary, Lester Pearson and Peter Whalan, Leary, and Pearson both made 4 and Peter made 5. Adios Peter.

To the ninth and deciding hole. Both Mark and Lester hit good drives, if either player was nervous, it did not show. Lester hit a great shot on to the green, all be it a long way from the pin. Mark, determined to make a game of it, hit his second just off the green, pin high and much closer than Lester. Lester putted first and ran 8 feet past the pin. In steps Mark, 2 puts for a four.

All pressure on Lester to sink his putt and go to a chip off. Not to be. Mark declared the winner of the Axeman 2023.

The Shootout was played in excellent spirit and all those who took part thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

George from Habitat Tree Works presented the winner with the trophy and $100. Lester receiving the runners up prize of $50. All others that participated received a consolation ball.

Hi Peter, just a thank you for arranging the competition today. I really enjoyed it and the format is great fun. Will you also pass on my thanks to the Sponsor Habitat, tree works.  The sponsorship is very much appreciated. Once again Thank you 🙏. John Farrell
