FATHER AND SON "PORT CUP"

A select group of elite Central Coast golfers braved the elements last weekend to contest the annual Father & Son Port Cup.

While some may complain about our own course conditions, they pale in comparison to the soggy fairways of Del Rio. Despite a glimpse of sunshine, gum boots were still the preferred footwear, and the greens—unmowed for weeks—were more “shaggy paddock” than “championship surface.”

The fathers’ team, featuring seasoned Breakers members Bone, Whalan and Searle—all previous Port Cup champions—put up a spirited fight. However, on this occasion the younger brigade proved too strong, soundly defeating their more experienced opponents.

Former regulars Leary and Ball were unavailable this year, but were quick to declare from afar that the fathers’ downfall was “inevitable” without their presence.

Another memorable Port Cup, full of laughs, mud, and a reminder that youth—and perhaps fresher legs—often has the final say. Competition rules will be changed for next year according to the match comittee.
