SUPER SENIORS PENNANTS ROUND 5
This week our Super Seniors travelled to Toukley to take on the home side on a course presented in excellent condition. The fairways had dried out nicely after recent wet weather, were well covered with grass, and the true, fast greens made for an enjoyable day of golf.
After our convincing 7–1 victory over Toukley at Breakers earlier in the season, the home team was keen to gain a little revenge. They managed to do just that, but only after a series of closely fought matches, eventually edging us out 4½–3½.
Congratulations to Phil Carter and Pete Searle, who both recorded dominant 6 & 5 victories, while Glenn Bainbridge continued his outstanding form with a solid 3 & 2 win. Warren "Doc" Butts battled all the way to the final hole. One down playing the 18th, Warren won the last to halve his match and earn a valuable half point for the team.
One of the matches of the day belonged to Greg Swanson. All square heading to the 18th tee, Greg unleashed a drive that finished at least 30 metres past his opponent. With both players just off the fairway, Greg appeared to hold the advantage, sitting on the left-hand side with a direct line to the green, although his ball was slightly below his feet. Greg's approach found the front of the green, but his opponent then produced the shot of the day, taking on the risky line over the water hazard and greenside bunker. The gamble paid off brilliantly, finishing close to the pin before holing the birdie putt to snatch both the hole and the match.
Next week we return home to face current division leaders Shelley Beach. A win would not only be a significant result but would also give us some well-earned bragging rights.
We currently sit third in the division, highlighting just how even the competition has been. Across our five matches we've won 19½ of the 40 individual games, almost exactly 50%, showing that every match has been fiercely contested and that we're very much in the hunt as the season heads towards its conclusion..
